Lately I have noticed some blogging and online banter about how "bad" Facebook is {ironic!}. Haters seem to consider Facebook an evil force that encourages stalking and keeping up with friends of the past {and present} in the "wrong way". Really? I would say "au contraire"!

I think it's quite an accomplishment that I have become simpatico with several babies since before birth! Sure, I might not have talked to Mom since college, but what's wrong with keeping up a la web? You sure find out more than you ever would using a rotary telephone. Those days are gone sistas! Technology has lent us his wiry hand to make things easier! Don't be ashamed for world wide webbing and "catching up" with old friends or giving a few happy birthday wishes to someone you haven't seen in years! Why not?! Technology is here to stay.

It's like Nicki Minaj says: "Starships were meant to fly"!

I just discovered fantastico news, thanks to Elements of Style. Bramasole, the star of one my favorite movies, "Under the Tuscan Sun" is now renovated and available to rent for luxurious Italian getaways! This could be a dream come true. I wonder if the charming real estate agent and eccentric friend are included? Move over Diane Lane! Your renovations have got nothing on these. I could be happy here. Please note that amenities include: a juicer, pizza oven, al fresco dining, and a wine cellar. Who is coming with me?!

Apres Ski...

It's been a week back from my ski-cation. I can safely say now {after trying the strange sport of skiing}, it is confirmed I am not a skier. Phew. Check that off the list. After an embarrassing and dramatic collapse on the {bunny} slopes, I sent the skis and poles packing. The rest of the trip shaped up exactly as it should have: massages, snow shoeing {much more civilized than skiing}, and lounging fireside. Although a long shot from my usual getaways...quite enjoyable.

Now, thank the lord I was home in time to watch the Oscars. Frankly, I am 90% interested in the red carpet and 10% interested in the cattiness of the actual awards. Obviously, less is more this year, as a movie without talking won Best Picture {still unsure about this}. But, keeping with the less is more trend... Gwyneth's amaze Tom Ford dress/cape. It may not be widely known, but I fancy myself a die hard fan of the cape {note: NOT capelet}. Gwennie girl took it home. I was satisfied to spend the remainder of the red carpet and awards show doing my own nails...gross {sigh...bonuses were horrible this year}.

Confession

My name is Blair, and I am going skiing. There...I said it.

After all the endless daydreams of summer and complaints about the evil cold weather, I am embarking on a cold-cation. I can't say I'm not excited. From what I hear, a ski getaway consists of lounge wear, fireside cocktails, and the infamous "apres ski"!

Now, I am going to try to ski....but I think it's the apres ski that sounds the most exciting. Of course, there are also a few new "outdoor chic" mountain clothes I will be wearing...when in Rome! Could this be the turning point in my winter phobia? Or just another catalyst for my rapidly growing addiction to lounge wear? Stay tuned.

Off to the slopes!!

Hibernation Stations

I am beginning to think that I was meant to hibernate during winter. It really doesn't matter what I do...I am always tired during the cold months.

I have tried it all:

Drinking copious amounts of water - check

Sleeping at least 9 hours a night {literally} - check

Eating health{ier} - semi check

Yoga - check

It just doesn't matter! Once the afternoon rolls around I am ready for a two hour nap and a warm meal. I am really getting a better appreciation for bears and the like. Fatten up for winter and just sleep through it. I like the sound of that.

Fighting through another chilly day and propping my eyelids open...I can only wish I was napping in one of these nests.

Wake me up when it's summer!

Real World Problems

Back to reality! It's been a slow crawl back to the life of the living since my return from el Caribe. No more sun, sand, or surf. Sigh. Too bad, vacations can't last forever.

Now, I usually don't like to discuss the troubles of the "real world", but my rehabilitation back into the working world has been made excessively more difficult over the last week. This has been due {in most part}, to the horrible and cringe-worthy co-host of my daily morning habit, The Today Show. I have really had it with Ann Curry. She is {for lack of a more colorful word} the worst! This weekend/week has been exceptionally bad. From making snide whispered remarks during interviews, to touching Jessica Simpson's hair at a Super Bowl party...she must be stopped! Her worst offense was a few months ago, when she kissed Adam Sandler’s hand after an interview. That was the end for me. I cannot forsake the Today Show, but Ann has got to go. I think she is better suited for a life overseas as an international correspondent. Leave the jokes and hand kissing to someone else. Savannah, Natalie, Amy Robach, Lester? ANYONE {except Jenna Wolfe - who is arguably worse than Ann}.

I took to the Today Show comments page today and let my feelings go viral. Let's hope some lucky Today Show staffer/upcoming star takes my complaints to heart and gets the waves of change moving behind the anchor desk!

L'Oscars: Film or Fashion?

Oscar nominations are in. Thus begins my countdown to ~~film's~~ fashion's biggest night! Sure, I am mildly excited for the nominations: The Help, Kristen Wiig for Original Screenplay, The Artist {which I haven't seen but feel compelled to support because it's so "different"..sigh}. But, I am totally baffled by others {ahem...Moneyball}. All this formality aside, we all know it's time to get our judging goggles on and get serious about who looks good enough to win and who looks bad enough to walk home {I'm talking to you

Nicole Kidman}.

How to Outsmart January

The Problem:

It goes without saying that January is the worst month. Christmas is over. It's cold and dreary. And it's at least 4 solid months until any significant warmth comes this way. Work weeks are endless and if it's not dark by 5pm every night, it's way too cold to step outside. You spend your weekends browsing OnDemand and flying through your wine stash at rapid speed. When you get up the strength to go out, it's either in unflattering layers; or, if you're brave and you have tried to look chic {and this inevitably involves thin clothing},the next thing you know, you're sitting by the door in a trendy, yet drafty, new restaurant, cursing winter and wondering if you will look too "homeless" eating your $30 steak with your puffy coat on.

Go away January!

The Remedy:

Plan a tropical vacation in January (February vacations are also acceptable).* You have to get away. No excuses. There are plenty of affordable options. All you need is a 4 day weekend to have some sun in your face and a few drinks in your hand. When is mine? Well good thing you asked. I set sail on Thursday for a weekend of daiquiris, sunburn, and snorkeling. I'll be back Monday...hopefully your vacation plan has been executed by then.

I wish I knew why I have forsaken my dear blog over the past few ~~weeks~~ months. I am going to compare it to one of those easy classes in college where you really like going, but after awhile you just decide to sleep in and miss it because you will easily catch up later. Sigh. However, in this case, there is no real "catching up"...just the weird feeling of guilt in the back of my head saying: "Why haven't you blogged about your hatred of purple??...or all the new beachy rooms in January's Coastal Living?!?!" Well it starts today! I'm back.

Christmas is a {Bourbon} Ball!

Bon Appetit!

Bourbon Balls

1 (12-oz.) package vanilla wafers, finely crushed

1 cup chopped pecans, toasted

3/4 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa

1/2 cup bourbon

2 1/2 tablespoons light corn syrup

Extra Powdered sugar

Stir together first 4 ingredients in a large bowl until well blended.
Stir together bourbon and corn syrup until well blended.
Stir together bourbon mixture and wafer mixture.
Shape into 1-inch balls; roll in powdered sugar.
Cover and chill up to 2 weeks

At long last...I am back. After a brief voyage back into the world of studying {never to be attempted again}, I have rejoined the living.

It's November now and that only means two things:

1. Christmas is coming

2. We can start wearing fur. Rejoice!

I have taken it upon myself to build up a substantial mink collection this fall. Fear not animal activists...they are vintage, so you cannot get too angry. I wore my mink cape for the first time this past weekend. So fun! Warm, chic, luxurious. You can imagine my glee when I opened my Harper's Bazaar this month to find a whole spread devoted to fur for the winter.

"The sun and the sand and a drink in my hand...with no bottom"...and sitting here. This beach house from House Beautiful this month is goin' coastal at its best. Love the turquoise and coral accents. Sparkle-icious!

Twist 'n Sparkle. My newest obsession and indulgent gadget via Oprah. Of course when O recommends it, I have to have it. This little bottle takes absolutely any liquid from flat to fizz in one minute! If you're rolling your eyes, envisioning a liter of some sparkling water sitting around...wrong! Twist 'n Sparkle takes any cocktail to the next level. Fizzy mojito?? Yes please! Sparkling pinot grigio?? Even Ramona Singer couldn't say no! This little treat is totally worth adding to your Williams-Sonoma cart. There is even a recipe book with fabulous and fancy drink ideas. The best part? It only takes 1-3 minutes to have your plain old sweet tea vodka turn into a carbonated masterpiece.

Summer's Not Over!

All this talk of fall is driving me bananas. Every store window I see is filled with browns and olives and plaids and reds {bleh}. Every website is advertising things like: new fall boots and even...scarves! The upside to this drab advertisement is that my month of "no shopping" is going swimmingly; as I would rather go carb free than start buying woolly sweaters in the heat of August. Because, if you ask me, summer is still very much here! In fact, I just bought a new bathing suit {last month, of course} to use for all the warm weather that awaits.

Why rush fall?? There are still so many days to take a swim, go to the beach, pick crabs, use outdoor showers, dine al fresco, drink cold white wine, wear no sleeves! I could go on. But, don't worry all you fall lovers. Soon enough the leaves will start to fall, {unfortunately} the NFL season will start, and you will pine for lazy summer days!

Until then....Fall, fall go away!

Meatless Monday

Having a meal sans meat is quite out of character for me. You could put it up there with...a month without shopping {sigh, currently experimenting with this}. But, if Oprah can do it...so can I, right?! Right. Thanks to my favorite food blog, A Hint of Honey, meatless Monday went off without of a hitch! I didn't even wish I had that extra side of protein. I won't say that this will become a Monday tradition, but every once in a full moon, a few more legumes can't hurt!

So last night it was Zucchini, Corn, and Black Bean Quesadillas. Let me tell you, they are to die! Pepperjack cheese, chili powder, and cilantro make these far more interesting than the name leads you to believe. Give them a try, mes cheries. You will want to pair with some lemon broccoli (double veggies will, of course, make you feel extra smug for having made such a health conscious meal) and an ice cold vinho verde.

Delicioso!

Zucchini, Corn, and Black Bean Quesadillas

INGREDIENTS

1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil

1 small red onion, thinly sliced

1/2 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced

1 cup fresh or frozen corn kernels

1 small zucchini, finely diced

1 tsp. chili powder

salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

1 can black beans, drained and rinsed

fresh cilantro, chopped + extra for garnish

8 medium whole wheat flour tortillas

12 oz. Pepper Jack cheese, grated

sour cream, for serving

salsa, for serving

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat olive oil in a large saute pan over medium heat. Add onion and jalapeno and cooked until softened. Stir in corn and zucchini. Season with chili powder, salt, and pepper. Cook until the zucchini is tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in the black beans to warm through.

2. Preheat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place a tortilla on the skillet and sprinkle with cheese. Spread several spoonfuls of the filling over the cheese. Sprinkle with cilantro. Top with more cheese and a second tortilla. Cook, flipping halfway through, until the tortilla is crisp and golden brown and the cheese has melted. Repeat with the remaining ingredients. Slice and serve with sour cream and salsa and garnish with fresh cilantro.

Makes 4 quesadillas.

I have been waiting to share this wedding since the big day itself, back in June. I spent the whole evening drooling over all the details, putting the menu cards in my purse, and saying "Why didn't I think of that"!? Rachel and Jeff's wedding was an absolute dream. Gorge! Everything sugar and spice, pinks and yellows, and the most beautiful flowers I've ever seen! The most delicious pink lemonade and sweet tea vodka punch kept me wanting to refill my glass all night. Fabulous! Not a stone was left unturned. The glamorous bride even changed into brand new, pink Jack Rogers with her NEW monogram during the reception. Sigh.

Finally! It appears my hellish slave-drivesque work week has dwindled. Slowly {but surely} I am transitioning back into my normal state of relaxation. Phew. No time to day dream and think about all things gorge makes for very dull days. But, you know what they say:

"Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else"

Could not be more true! I would rather be lounging in these perfectly pink and turquoise rooms, featured on House of Turquoise a few weeks back {still catching up on my daily reads}. Pops of pink in every corner...divine!

Bonjour! You may remember this. Unfortunately my excitement got ahead of me exactly one month ago today. But today is indeed, Bastille Day! Celebrate! Wine, baguette, brie, maybe even...escargots?! Indulge pretties and be European for the day. If you're lucky you can sneak out for an afternoon nap, just like they do in Paris. Sigh. It's another day of team building here, but I will not let this celebration go unnoticed! Good thing I pulled out all the stops in June.

Hopefully I will be back in the saddle again and dreaming of vacation getaways in no time. Where to go next? It's nowhere until I climb out of this pile of work and back to relaxing. I have failed in all my Francophile-ness by missing the date of Bastille Day. No, La Fete Nationale is not today, June 14th, but July 14th. Please don't stop celebrating. We will just have to do it twice.

Tuesday's "Reason" to Celebrate...

You guessed it! Mais oui, mes petits...it is ~~Bastille Day~~ ~~once again~~ one month until Bastille Day. The French Independence Day, "La Fete Nationale" ~~is being~~ will be celebrated all over Paris ~~as we speak~~ on July 14th. And why should we be left out just because we had the unfortunate luck of being born "overseas"?! We won't! Be sure to have a glass of bubbles or a baguette and brie this evening as you toast the day. I am making a delicious summer spin on the classic coq au vin. Pair that with a glass of vin and some french macaroons...ooh la la!

There is always a reason to celebrate...{Even if it is not actually Bastille Day}. Oops.
But, vive la France!!

Poolside Dreaming...

Sigh. Of course Monday arrives and it is sunny and pleasant and gorgeously un-humid. The perfect pool day. The only thing missing is the day off...and a pool. What I wouldn't give to be cruising around and stopping off at a gorgeous pool hide-away like these.

I would most definitely finish the day off with a Lemon-Basil Marg. Just came across this recipe and cannot wait to try it...pool or not!

Lemon Basil Margarita

Ingredients:

» 1 shot of tequila (preferably silver, but gold works as well)

» ½ shot of Amaretto almond liquor

» Fresh basil

» Lemon wedge

» Heavy splash of homemade sweet n’ sour (directions below)

» Small splash of soda

*Muddle basil in glass with chopped lemon wedge (extract oils from the rind). Add ice and the rest of the ingredients and voila!

Homemade Sweet n’ Sour Ingredients:

» Equal parts simple syrup and lemon juice

*Add ingredients together and refrigerate

First stop is Saturday's Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown Band concert.

After a 27 year search, I have found pure bliss. It came in the form of Canyon Ranch Miami Beach, and I cannot put into words how amazing this treasure was! Every one of you must go least ~~five~~ one time in your life.

Three R's: refresh, relax, and royalty, dominated our stay. Treated like royalty in a ginormous suite, you have little choice but to relax and spend your time getting refreshed. From oceanfront yoga, to lobster dinners, to the best massage my back has ever known, my only complaint was leaving. If you meditate hard enough, you might be able to picture yourself there. Lord knows I'm trying!

Big hats, mint juleps, and {if you're lucky} a good band! Go ahead and let your new spring wardrobe make an appearance...even if you're not celebrating anything but hump day, with a few cold glasses of bubbly on the back porch.

Mama Mia!

I have never been a fan of "make your own" pizzas. As far as I'm concerned, leave it to the professionals. Most likely, your creation will taste nothing like Papa's. These were my thoughts...until last night. I wearily stumbled upon a delicious summer creation that left me drooling for more. And, {gasp} I don't think the professionals could master this homemade recipe. Fresh and semi-healthy {ie: it's from Cooking Light}, this za was a welcome week night treat! I substituted apples for peaches and added a little bit more chicken and cheese. C'est bon!

Gorgonzola Chicken Pizza

Ingredients

1 (10-ounce) prebaked thin pizza crust (such as Boboli)
*(I used the fresh Trader Joe's crust and baked it for 5 minutes before topping...worked like a charm!)

Cooking spray

1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil

3/4 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup shredded cooked chicken breast

1/2 cup crumbled Gorgonzola cheese

1 medium unpeeled peach, thinly sliced *(I used an apple here and it was delicious)

1/3 cup balsamic vinegar

Preparation
1. Preheat oven to 400°.

2. Place pizza crust on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Brush 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil evenly over crust. Top evenly with half of the shredded mozzarella cheese, chicken, Gorgonzola cheese, and peach slices. Top with remaining mozzarella. Bake at 400° for 11 minutes or until crust browns.

3. Place vinegar in a small saucepan over medium-high heat; cook until reduced to 2 tablespoons (about 5 minutes). Drizzle balsamic reduction evenly over pizza. Cut pizza into 8 wedges.

Royal Red, White, and Blue

Cue the bells, cue the trumpets...cheers and champagne! What a wonderful weekend to have celebrated the red, white, and blue. Royal wedded bliss has come and gone, and what a fairytale it was to see. If it were up to me, we would still be toasting champagne and having tea parties! Sigh. Life must go on, I suppose. But I am still swooning over all things white, Westminster, and Buckingham.

And again on Sunday night, it was cheers and champagne in the streets! Celebrating the red, white, and blue again, but this time for our fellow Americans! Let those freak flags fly. Celebrate this week!

I heard this morning that "The art of millinery is back"!

Phew!

Hat making is big business in the Old Country, and I am ready to take it on here in the States! Fascinators are all the rage again! Try telling me that wearing one of these delicate confections would not make a special occasion more fun.

I am in a tizz trying to select the perfect one for Friday, April 29th. I think one would look marvelous with my sofa, robe, and coffee.

Bermu-delicious

Sigh.

Being back from a marvelous vacation is the WORST. The island time to work time change is not an easy transition.

Bermuda was gorge. A sunny and beautiful relaxation station. When we weren't beaching, we were eating. And let me tell you...there was plenty to choose from! We got swizzled and swaggered, starting with the famous Bermuda Rum Swizzle: a deceptively strong and delicious drink.

Being the oink that I am...the dinners were arguably, the best part of our trip! Fresh seafood and local treats every night! Dinners lasted 2 hours and I came away with a round tummy and empty pockets! It was love. Barracuda Grill and Port O Call still have me dreaming!

When can I go back???

Rain, rain {and cold temps} go away! What happened to Spring? As soon as I acknowledged her, Spring went on vacation...probably somewhere warm. Ugh! With hopes of warm sunshine coming soon, all you can do to survive these ugly winter-ish blues is to stay comfy.

Ooh la la Papi!

With all this warm weather talk, I needed to find something delicious to go with my springtime margaritas. This blackened fish taco recipe from Cooking Light is absolutely to DIE for. Fresh, spicy, and {ahem} healthy, I have made this recipe twice in the past week. The sour cream and cilantro sauce is amaze-a-licious! Try substituting thin sliced chicken breast for the fish. I've even tried it with sirloin!

Blackened Tilapia Baja Tacos

Ingredients

1/4 cup reduced-fat sour cream

2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and chopped

1 cup thinly sliced white onion

1 1/2 teaspoons paprika

1 1/2 teaspoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon dried oregano

3/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper

4 (6-ounce) tilapia fillets

1 tablespoon canola oil

8 (6-inch) corn tortillas

1/2 ripe peeled avocado, thinly sliced

4 lime wedges

Preparation

1. Combine first 4 ingredients in a food processor; process until smooth. Combine jalapeño sauce and onion in a small bowl.

2. Combine paprika and next 6 ingredients (through ground red pepper); sprinkle evenly over fish. Heat oil in a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add fish to pan; cook 3 minutes on each side or until desired degree of doneness.

3. Warm tortillas according to package directions. Divide fish, onion mixture, and avocado evenly among tortillas. Serve with lime wedges.

Salut Spring!

Finally the winter duldrums have started to pack their bags and make their way back North! Spring has paid us a few visits and I have a feeling she will be moving in for good in the next few weeks. Hallehlujah! I am almost as allergic to cold weather as I am to excercise.

What better way to ring in Spring's arrival than to celebrate with friends, buy spring treats, or ~~dust off the old~~ get a new warm weather wardrobe?! I did all three, of course! The weekend was carefree and fancy-free- delicious meals, bellinis, dancing, scouting out new trends {ie: the illusive cross body satchel...I must be behind?}, and shopping for necessitites. I'm ready for Spring with a new cloud-like bed and a few things to enjoy when I get out of it. Hope you're praying for warm weather and all things pink!

While the hosts were absolute misery, any good awards show viewer knew to forge ahead to get those up close and personal views of the night's hits and misses. I won't focus on the negative. While there were more than a few misses {I'm talking to you Marisa Tomei, Amy Adams, Nicole Kidman, and -though I hate to say it- Reese Witherspoon. The black and white should stay in David's Bridal}, the hits were faboush!

Today is the under-celebrated holiday: President's Day. Under-celebrated and over acknowledged; I am at my desk while I browse through the piles of multiple "updates" from all those plebeians shouting from the rooftops what they're doing {or not doing} on this day off from work.

But more importantly, I was thinking about what to celebrate today...and it came to me. What good is a President without a first lady?? Let's celebrate some of the best! They're usually who we're looking at anyway!

There is little in life as fulfilling and magnificent as providing yourself a weekly {or daily} indulgence in something fabulous. How else would we get through the week?!

For all novices, indulge is defined as:

in-dulge [in-duhlj] verb, -to allow (oneself) to follow one's will (usually followed by in ): to indulge oneself in reckless spending.

Exactly! The dictionary provides such a marvelous example!

To indulge IS:

to buy an overpriced, hand crafted, turquoise bird that would look devine on your mantle... just to cheer up a dreary Wednesday

to have a late and leisurely pasta dinner WITH bread, and preceded by copious amounts of red wine

to arrive to work a little late, just so you can stop and get a fancy, steamed, coffee creation

to have champagne as often as possible

to eat sweets at least once a day...it's only natural!

to book a spur of the moment getaway

To indulge IS NOT:

to bore people with droning stories about your ordinary life (this is better defined as self-indulgent)

to skip your twice daily run, once a week

to "treat yourself" to sugar in coffee on a Friday

to drink diet energy drinks

to drink energy drinks at all

to shop...for groceries only

to skimp on the essential luxuries: linens, toilet paper, paper towels {this is a given!}

to think about how great you are by not indulging

Take notes! These little pleasures are crucial to surviving the work week!

Ooh la la!! I stumbled across these absolutely terrific duvets today, and I am in love! Lollia is news to me, but I am so happy I have found it!
